12x - 23 + 2x = -5
14x-23=-5 /+23
14x=18
x=18/14=9/7

combine the like terms (x) so,
[tex]12x+2x-23=-5[/tex]
so, this will give you: [tex]14x-23=-5[/tex]
now, remove the numbers
so, [tex]14x=-5+23[/tex]
this will give you : [tex]14x+18[/tex]
[tex]x = \frac{18}{14} [/tex]
[tex]x = 1.285714286[/tex]
